I don’t like Flash, either:)

You cannot send a link to a specific photo to a friend, for example. Plain ol’ HTML, CSS and images are best for showing one’s photography — or so I believe… :)

(First time, btw, I enjoyed a lot of your photos in /zenphoto :)

Hello Dave,

I count myself very lucky because I used to be the Production Director of the company who printed both the books you mention! I recall that Tom was very involved with every minute detail of the production of his book, which is not surprising, after all the work he’d done just to get it to press. Have you seen what this book is now worth? And Last Resort? I’m still in contact with Martin and still help with the production of some of his work (I now own my own print productio company). Dave, I’m in the photie at The Chelsea wagging my finger at a girl I knew. Tom and Martin were always around and we got used to them.
I too went the Tate and the experience set me off and I wrote a song about The Photie Man which you can hear at my site.

well, I just happened to be in Liverpool yesterday, and decided to visit the Tate Modern. There is a large photography exhibition on the 2nd floor where some of Tom’s images can be seen, alongside other work by many big names.

Don, yes of course you re correct, it’s stuff that could and should, have been changed beforehand. But of course, time and money are always constraints, and not enough of each were available in this instance. Sometimes you just have to work with what you have, so I had to consider what I was able to change afterwards. Also, I have posted a highly changed example, to illustrate the point.

I agree with most of your writing on the subject of retouching. But I have to say, after looking at the before/after page.
Very many of the things you changed could (and should) have been done before you took the photo.

I’m not a photographer as a profession.
I’m an art director. I deal with stylists and models from time to time. If I had to do this much work on very many of the photos I direct for clients. The budgets and timing would be lost. As would my job I guess.

But I’ll say this - you sure did a really nice job on the retouching. Top shelf work!

Did you take the new jacket sleeve pattern from the jacket lapel?
